MONTESSORI AND KINDERGARTEN

The Junior School is a dynamic environment in which we see significant developments in physical, emotional and intellectual growth from Kindergarten through to graduation at the completion of year 6. These are the ‘Foundation Years’ during which early linguistic and arithmetic basics, scope for creative play and expression, physical fitness and constructive socialization are crucial steps in building childhood competencies. This is the when good habits are instilled and a sense of identity and place take shape.

Kindergarten I and II have two sections with two teachers in each section. The maximum number of students in each section is 20.

Students of Kindergarten I develop fine motor skills, auditory visual discrimination, hand eye co-ordination, one-to-one correspondence and logical thinking. Interesting writing activities are given to enhance their observation skills, quantitative analysis and sequencing.

In Kindergarten II, more emphasis is on reading, to increase the vocabulary of students. Students start framing simple sentences, which brings out their creative writing skills. Mathematics and Science are dealt with interactive sessions where discussions from the child are encouraged and emphasized. Craft activities, which help in developing motor co-ordination and concentration, story telling, poetry recitation, singing, drama and dance, are also a part of the Kindergarten II programme.

PRIMARY SECTION

As students move through the Primary School, we begin to introduce them progressively to the world of integrated knowledge, while particularly strengthening their aptitude in the core studies of English, Hindi, Kannada, Mathematics, General Science and Social Science. This is a time of multi-dimensional learning.

A wide range of classroom activities are used as stimuli for reading and writing. From Class - 1, our students are introduced to the study of computers, appreciating that computer literacy is essential in a modern world. Children start using the Math Lab from class-1, which helps them to sharpen their analytical skills. We also encourage students in the primary school to do various projects in Environmental Science appreciating the History, Geography and cultural diversity of our Earth.

Students have physical training classes to develop their ability and fitness. Art and Music classes in the primary school create an awareness and appreciation to the these creative forms.

Establishing worthwhile work habits, persistence, independence, time management and an appreciation of the value of learning oneself begins early in the schooling process at Navodaya Kishore Kendra.

MIDDLE CLASSES

In class 6 students are taught to handle larger portions than what they tackled in class-1 to 5. Along with English, Hindi, Kannada, Mathematics, General Science and Social Studies, Kannada is introduced as a third language, as part of the three language system adopted in the Indian schools.

Students enter the ‘Middle School’ a critical period in education, in class-6. Life really comes alive with this vivacious, confused, boisterous and intelligent group of students belonging to clss-6, 7 and 8.

Middle School students are ready to tackle deeper and more discreet subjects with an array of specialist teachers, including the challenge of additional languages. Mathematics is split into Mathematics-II, Arithmetic and Geometry, General Science becomes more detailed as Physics, Chemistry and Biology and Social Science becomes more specialized as History-Civics and Geography. English, Hindi, Kannada and Computer Science continue to be one the agenda.

These years are also a good time to learn the discipline and skills of preparing for tests and examinations. Students are taught to handle term portions, to gradually get trained to appear for the Board Examinations in the senior classes.

SECONDARY SECTION

As students progress through the senior years, we expect them to become increasingly independent learners with an interest in setting personal academic goals. It is our belief that rigour and regular testing provide young students with the self-discipline and confidence to handle more advanced senior tasks. Building self-esteem, self-respect and the courage to explore are the qualities we seek to reinforce in our student body.

Class 9 is a preparing ground for students to take off to the tenth standard where students will face their first significant Board examination. These two years, students get maximum attention from their parents and constant advice from teachers.

The subjects included for these classes are English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science, Social Science. The physical training classes build up stamina and are thoroughly enjoyed by the students. The students also excel in SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work) and General studies assessments. These students run their race in high spirits and with determination.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

In the Montessori and Kindergarten classes, evaluation is done on a day-to-day basis by way of worksheets based on the syllabus taught. The overall performance of the child is judged by the end-of-the-year tabulation of these evaluations.

Class 1 to 5, are subjected to unit test and monthly reviews. These are tests based on small portions covered during the course of the month and give a comprehensive picture of the child’s grasping and retention of the curriculum. The end of the year evaluation of these monthly reviews helps in judging the overall performance of the child and his/her ability to meet unit tests and the requisites for the next class.

From class-1 to 10, the school follows the semester system. The year is divided into two terms each comprising of two Formative Assessment and one Summative Assessment examination. Continuous evaluation is done in the areas of theory, practicals, projects and viva. grades are awarded on a nine-point scale. Continuous evaluation in languages is done in the parameters of comprehension, oratory and recitation skills, classroom involvements, ability to work in a group, leadership qualities are other areas of evaluation.

For class X students, examinations are held like a continuous rehearsal to ensure a certain level of perfection. These repeated examinations prepare the students to face the CBSE Board Exams with ease.

The Central Board of Secondary Education does not follow a ranking system. It awards merit certificates to students through grading system who appear for the AISSE examinations.
